A new, TOGGLE-HAPPY website for The Canary Project's TOOLSHED initiative.

TOOLSHED began as The Canary Project's forum for ideas, projects and resources for living through the end times known as Modern Primitive Exchange. With a move to the Hudson Valley to work in collaboration with Basilica Hudson, the project got a new vision, a new name and a new brand identity.

TOOLSHED is a platform working at the intersection of art, ecology, education and activism, which has evolved to encompass a tool lending library as well as an interactive exhibition space within the Hudson Public Library.

We designed the logo to convey the spirit of care, community and radiating empowerment that the project embodies as it expands beyond the digital to physical spaces and events.

The website uses a blog format, but with an interactive twist that allows users to view content through two separate lenses - content type (essays, projects & tools) as well as subject matter (kin, food, shelter, magic). Without leaving the page, visitors can sort through content types with a responsive interface that keeps resources at their fingertips.

A visual wayfinding system of colors for subject matter, tabs for content type, and highlights for words that can be found in the glossary help users move through the complexity of the content with ease.

A sophisticated approach to javascript integration with Wordpress allows for a user-friendly Content Management System experience for the client, while delivering an innovative, participatory format for visitors to the project.
